In orthodontics, an orthodontist will recommend braces to improve the alignment of teeth and position of an individuals bite. Braces are utilized for correction of malocclusions, which can be cosmetic or structural, these include; crooked teeth, overbites, underbites, cross bites and open bites; a variety of teeth and jaw imperfections.
Braces work with other orthodontic instruments to expand the jaws, palate in order to shape teeth and jaws. Orthodontic braces are utilized for children and teenagers and sometimes adults.
Types of braces:
Braces are traditionally stainless steel, with materials combined with nickel titanium.
Clear braces are a cosmetic replacement for traditional metal braces, because they blend with the natural color of teeth. However the functionality remains the same as stainless steel. One issue with Clear braces can be that they fracture easily.
Invisalign is a brand of clear, progressive retainers, and work to gradually align teeth in the proper position.
Progressive clear retainers, marketed under the tradename Invisalign, may be used to gradually move teeth into their final position. These have the same effect as braces but can be removed easily for eating. These type of braces are generally not used for complex orthodontic cases, such as when extractions, jaw surgery, or palate expansion are necessary.
